Jaclyn Pearson, Isles of Scilly Seabird Project
Jonny Rankin joined the project on Scilly in September 2015. Jonny made the visit very special due to his enthusiasm for the subject - keen to get stuck in and learn all about the work of the project and see evidence of the birds we are protecting.
It was a joy to explain all the aspects of the project to Jonny as he really wanted to understand and reflect the importance of the Seabird Recovery Project and all the wonderful, wildlife and people involved.
The two articles he wrote really captured what we wanted to say and the essence of all that is Scilly and its wonderful birds. Thank you Jonny, visit us again soon.
Adam Gretton, Suffolk Ornithological Group
Jonny’s talk to SOG was very well received, with lots of resulting questions and interest. His real passion and commitment to turtle doves, through Dove Step, was clear to all – even if the gruesome blister photos made one or two wince!
The total amount donated on the evening was £150 (from about 40 members), showing how much support there is for Dove Step. We only hope it isn’t already too late, and that something can be done about Mediterranean shooting, which would seem to be the biggest continuing threat.
On behalf of SOG, I would warmly recommend Jonny as a passionate and entertaining speaker.
Matt Meritt, Bird Watching Magazine
At Bird Watching we always encourage readers to make the most of the birding on their own doorstep. In Jonny Rankin's case, he's taken something he observed on his own patch – the decline of the Turtle Dove – and turned it into an inspiring, vital conservation project, Dove Step, that offers other birdwatchers the chance to take positive action, too.
Join Jonny and take steps to save this iconic bird now!
Martin Garner, Birding Frontiers
There are a few birders who I really really admire.
Jonny Rankin is one of these. The reason? His engagement with the plight of the Turtle Dove has gone way beyond words. It has been action packed, full of inspiring activities taken to raise money, awareness and inspire those of us who get a little overwhelmed by too many causes. Of all the voices advocating for this rapidly disappearing species- it’s Jonny’s which has caught my attention time and again.
Keep Going Jonny!
